Free Canela font alternatives
Published by Commercial Type in 2016, Canela made its debut in issue no. 5 of fashion and art magazine Document Journal.
When Miguel Reyes began designing Canela, he initially imagined it as an interpretation of Caslon, but influenced by his experience with stone carving, he made the decision of minimizing the serifs into flarings.
This resulted in a typeface that defies traditional classifications, with forms both soft and sharp, modern yet with distinct classical roots. It’s somewhere between sans and serif, and this makes finding an alternative impossible. But there are a few good serifs that can be used as replacement in projects that Canela doesn’t fit within the budget.
