Syne by Lucas Descroix

Syne by Lucas Descroix

Syne is a nonconformist font family with 5 styles, custom designed in 2017 for the art center Synesthésie in Paris. It’s an exploration of atypical associations of weights and styles, reflecting diverse artistic personalities.

Since June 2018 it has been released as open source.

It was imagined by Bonjour Monde and designed by Lucas Descroix with help from Arman Mohtadji. The Mono style was distorted using Bonjour Monde’s DataFace, written by Arman Mohtadji.

The 5 styles included are:

  • Regular is a geometric sans with condensed vertical proportions (short ascenders, descenders, and uppercase), designed for longer texts. It features minimalistic diacritic marks, reduced to the simplest form.
  • Bold
  • Mono — built upon the Regular style, but strongly distorted with DataFace
  • Italic — combines Regular’s x-height and optical weight with Renaissance flourished typefaces such as Robert Granjon’s
  • Extra — expanded style that draws inspiration from Eurostile
